City commemorates fallen officers

Earlier today the City’s Safety and Security Directorate held a Remembrance Day and wreath laying ceremony at the Civic Centre to pay tribute and remember fallen officers. The Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato and Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, attended the service.
The annual Remembrance Day ceremony held in the Civic Centre is an event that gives officers from the City’s enforcement agencies an opportunity to commemorate and pay tribute to colleagues who lost their lives in the line of duty and during the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic. It also offers an opportunity to remember those fallen officers and the dedication they showed in carrying out their duties in contributing to safer communities in the metropole.
‘The Remembrance Day ceremony reminded us of the fallen officers who paid the highest price to protect and serve. We stand together in unity to respect their contribution but also to allow our officers to build on and strengthen their legacy. The ceremony allowed us to salute the fallen officers and the loved ones they left behind. The City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security staff play an important role in crime prevention and support to other enforcement agencies and the South African Police Service,’ said the Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato.
Safety and Security officers will face many challenges in sometimes dangerous environments but the camaraderie built between officers will allow for more cohesive team work and the mutual protection of each other in the work environment.
‘While officers look back at the past and pay tribute to those colleagues who lost their lives during the Covid-19 pandemic, Remembrance Day allows them to build unity, respect and compassion as they carry on with daily patrols and other enforcement operations while working closely with community organisations in the City’s efforts to build safer communities,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
